Our Philosophy.
At the Messy Artist, we focus on sensory exploration
and the process of art. All the art projects we do are open ended in nature,
and the artists (the children) can use the materials in any way they see
fit. Even at the age of 2, children are expressing themselves through
art. We follow a "hands off" rule. Adults are asked not to touch
their child's artwork. This philosophy encourages independence, success
and builds self-esteem. Adults are encouraged to create alongside with
their children to experience the joy of art with their child.
Who Started This?
The Messy Artist program was created by Donna Bernstein. An early childhood
educator and child development specialist, Donna has a Master of Arts
degree from Columbia University and 25 years of teaching experience. She
is also a potter who works in her home pottery studio. Donna has one son,
who is usually elbow deep in a very creative mess!
